Consultant - Space Sustainability Implementation and Stakeholder Coordination

Under the direct supervision of the Director of UNOOSA and in close coordination with colleagues of the Space Sustainability Section and the UNOOSA lead on AI as required, the consultant will perform the following tasks: (a) Onboarding of operators for the United Nations Space Operators Coordination Hub (UN-SOCH) • Support the onboarding of operators for the operator coordination directory developed as UN-SOCH, including content quality control, user guidance and administrative follow-up. • Engage with representatives, operators, and relevant partners to gather feedback on usability, information needs, access arrangements and future functionality. • Prepare short feedback summaries and practical recommendations for iterative improvements, prioritization, and governance of the directory. • Coordinate with relevant UNOOSA colleagues and service providers, as required, to ensure that agreed updates are reflected in the platform and related documentation. • Manage the day-to-day administration of UN-SOCH, including access requests, user accounts, user support and record keeping. (b) Operationalisation and launch-support of UN-SOCH • Support the continued operationalisation of UN-SOCH, including launch-support activities and the onboarding of initial operators ahead of launch. • Prepare practical guidance, briefing materials and outreach content to support operator uptake and stakeholder engagement in the lead-up to and around launch. • Coordinate practical engagement and follow-up with participants and partners, and support the preparation of concise summaries of progress and recommended next steps. (c) Enhancement of the UN-SOCH platform • Support the enhancement of the UN-SOCH platform, including identification and specification of functional improvements based on operator and stakeholder feedback. • Prepare accompanying documentation, including user guidance materials and administrative/technical notes, to support the platform's continued development. • Prepare recommendations for future development of UN-SOCH, including options for governance, prioritization, and longer-term functionality. • Support Phase II of the UN-SOCH development, including the expansion of the platform so that Member States can sign up. (d) Cross-cutting reporting and coordination • Contribute to internal progress reporting and maintain a clear record of activities, outputs, issues, and recommendations. • Undertake other closely related tasks as required by the Director in support of the Section's implementation-oriented mandate.

Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this assignment is to support the Director and the Space Sustainability Section in taking forward a practical implementation agenda on space sustainability through three mutually reinforcing workstreams: • Proceed with the onboarding of operators for the operator coordination directory launched as the United Nations Space Operators Coordination Hub (UN-SOCH), including stakeholder engagement, user support and structured feedback collection. • Continue the operationalization of UN-SOCH, including launch-support and the onboarding of initial operators ahead of launch, to advance practical coordination and implementation across all orbit regimes. • Support the enhancement of the UN-SOCH platform, including accompanying documentation and recommendations for future development, as well as related implementation-oriented activities.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree in space engineering, space systems engineering, astrodynamics, international relations, space law, space policy, or a related field. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as space sustainability, stakeholder coordination, international cooperation, or implementation support. Demonstrated experience in coordinating with industry and institutional stakeholders and translating consultations into practical recommendations or workplans. Experience in organizing policy meetings, workshops or expert consultations involving multiple stakeholder groups. Excellent drafting and communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise briefing materials, summaries, and stakeholder-facing documents. Experience working with international organizations or the United Nations system is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
