Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This internship is based in the UNEP Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station. The purpose of this internship is to support communications activities related to World Environment Day, Champions of the Earth, Young Champions of the Earth, the UN Environment Assembly and other initiatives that are key to the priorities of the UNEP Communication Division. Under the general guidance of the Director of Communications and direct supervision of the Communication Lead, Special Events, the intern will: • Assist in the development of a wide range of communication materials, including meeting notes, email correspondence, draft background papers, social media content, and digital analyses. • Support coordination within the Communication Division and with other departments and offices, including information sharing, follow-up and tracking of actions. • Support partnerships related to World Environment Day, Champions of the Earth and Young Champions of the Earth, including responding to partner inquiries, scheduling meetings, conducting research and due diligence, maintaining partner databases, and monitoring relevant information and data. • Support outreach for public advocacy campaigns and initiatives, including liaising with partners and stakeholders and following up on communications and implementations. • Assist with the organization and logistical coordination of internal and external meetings and events, including agenda preparation, scheduling and documentation. • Support the preparation of campaign briefings, wrap-up reports and other communications materials. • Provide administrative, project management, and information management support, as needed. • Perform other related duties as assigned -needed basis, as may be required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). (c).Preferred areas of studies: Communication, International affairs, or environment-related field preferred. No working experience is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
