The Organizational Setting

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that supports cooperation among its Member States in international civil aviation.

The Capacity Development and Implementation Bureau (CDI) supports Member States and the global aviation community through a diverse portfolio of products, services and initiatives, including implementation support, training, events, publications, data services and digital platforms.

The Marketing Team supports this portfolio through integrated marketing campaigns, email and social media, audience engagement, events, customer relationship management (CRM), marketing technology, analytics and digital content platforms.

Under the supervision of the Marketing Manager and with guidance from members of the Marketing Team, the intern will contribute to these activities while gaining practical experience in digital marketing and communications in an international United Nations environment.

Learning and Development Opportunities

The internship provides hands-on exposure to campaign development, content marketing, CRM and audience segmentation, marketing analytics, event promotion, digital platforms and the responsible use of AI-enabled tools. The intern will work with an international team, gain exposure to ICAO programmes and stakeholders across the global aviation community, and have opportunities for professional development, networking and participation in relevant ICAO learning activities. The primary focus of the internship will be the development and adaptation of digital marketing content across email, social media and other digital channels, with additional exposure to events, CRM, audience data and marketing analytics.

Terms of Reference

Under the supervision of the Marketing Manager, the intern will:

  1. Support social media and digital content development
  • Research and draft social media content supporting ICAO products, services, events and digital content.
  • Adapt marketing messages for different audiences and digital channels.
  • Assist with the preparation of basic creative assets using approved tools such as Canva, VEED or similar applications.
  • Support coordinated promotional initiatives.
  • Compile information, images and source materials required for campaign development.
  • Prepare social media materials for review and coordination through applicable ICAO approval processes.

Expected result: Clear, accurate and engaging digital content is produced efficiently and consistently for approved campaigns.

  1. Support digital marketing campaigns and email communications
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of digital marketing campaigns for ICAO products, services, events and initiatives.
  • Draft and prepare marketing emails, newsletters and other digital communications.
  • Support recurring email, newsletter and social media initiatives.
  • Assist with campaign scheduling, quality assurance and coordination of promotional assets.
  • Support the promotion of ICAO products, services, events and digital content.
  • Assist with monitoring campaign performance and preparing concise performance summaries.

Expected result: Accurate and audience-appropriate campaign materials are prepared on schedule, and relevant campaign results are documented for future planning.

  1. Support event marketing and audience engagement
  • Support marketing activities for ICAO global and regional events before, during and after events.
  • Assist with event mobile-app content and provide participant support where required.
  • Assist with audience research and draft outreach messages under supervision.
  • Support collection of participant and stakeholder testimonials.
  • Assist with ICAO Products and Services booths and other onsite promotional activities.
  • Support preparation of event marketing snapshots and post-event information.

Expected result: Event marketing activities are supported by accurate research, organized information and timely digital and onsite assistance.

  1. Support CRM, audience data and marketing analytics
  • Support CRM and audience-data management.
  • Support consolidation of email, website, social media and campaign performance data.
  • Assist in preparing simple reports, dashboards and presentations to support marketing planning and decision-making.

Expected result: Audience and campaign data are organized accurately and translated into useful information for marketing planning and review.

  1. Support ICAO digital content platforms
  • Support marketing and audience-development activities for ICAO TV and UnitingAviation.
  • Assist with promotion of articles, videos, webinars and other digital content.
  • Compile platform and campaign performance metrics, including article, email and social media performance where available.
  • Support updates to marketing materials, media kits and audience information.
  • Assist with preparation of basic post-campaign summaries.

Expected result: Digital platform marketing is supported through timely promotion, accurate audience information and organized reporting.

  1. Support learning, research and team activities
  • Participate in Marketing Team meetings and campaign planning activities.
  • Research emerging digital marketing practices, technologies and audience-engagement approaches.
  • Use approved digital and AI-enabled tools responsibly to support marketing workflows, with appropriate human review and verification.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and marketing assets.
  • Complete mandatory ICAO training and participate in relevant learning opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties consistent with the learning objectives of the internship.

Expected result: The intern progressively develops practical digital marketing skills while contributing effectively to the work of the Marketing Team.

Qualifications

Educational background

At the time of application, candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a university degree programme in a field related to:

  • Marketing;
  • Communications;
  • Business or Business Administration;
  • Digital Media;
  • Public Relations;
  • Journalism;
  • Business or Marketing Analytics; or
  • another related field.

Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements established under the ICAO Internship Programme.

Essential skills

Strong written communication and editing skills, with the ability to develop clear, concise and audience-appropriate digital content in English.

Ability to adapt messages for different audiences and digital channels.

Strong research, organization and attention-to-detail skills.

Desirable knowledge and experience

  • Exposure to digital marketing, communications, social media or content development.
  • Familiarity with email marketing, CRM or marketing automation platforms.
  • Experience using Canva, VEED or similar digital-content tools.
  • Familiarity with website, email or social media analytics.
  • Experience supporting events, newsletters, campaigns or digital content.
  • Familiarity with generative AI or other emerging digital marketing tools, including the critical review and verification of AI-assisted outputs.

Language skills

Essential requirements: Fluent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.

Desirable requirements: A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Conditions of Internship

This is a paid internship. Interns will receive a monthly stipend in accordance with the ICAO Internship Programme. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.

In addition to the monthly stipend, interns accrue one and a half days of leave per month during the internship and may participate in relevant ICAO training and learning activities, subject to applicable approvals and availability.

Upon successful completion of the internship and separation procedures, ICAO will issue a certificate describing the duration, assignment and Terms of Reference of the internship, together with a brief objective assessment of performance. Supervisors may also consider providing a reference or recommendation upon request.

The initial duration of the internship will be six months, with the possibility of extension, by agreement between the supervisor and the intern and subject to organizational requirements, for a total internship period not exceeding twelve months.

The internship is an in-person assignment at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, and the intern is expected to work five days per week on a full-time basis.

Interns shall not be eligible to be engaged in any other form of employment within ICAO during the period of internship. While interns may apply for ICAO vacancies as external candidates, a cooling-off period of six months between the end of the internship and the commencement of any other contractual relationship with ICAO shall apply.

Interns have the obligation to carry out duties assigned to them with loyalty, discretion and conscience and will act in accordance with the relevant official instructions issued by the Organization.

ICAO may terminate the internship before its expiry date by providing at least two weeks’ written notice, unless special circumstances apply. An intern may terminate the internship by providing at least one week’s written notice, unless special circumstances apply.
